What is Pilates?  Pilates provides a TOTAL BODY workout with emphasis on core
conditioning and overall flexibility.  The "core" is the area around your middle where the
muscles that support the spine are located.  The "core" extends from the shoulder to the
pelvic area.  The Pilates technique consists of a series of controlled, flowing movements,
that will improve your shape, flexibility and help remedy postural problems.  Click the link
below to see a demo of a 15 minute basic Pilates workout.
Instructor:  Todd Gibbs is a certified Pilates instructor with over 4 years of experience,
certified by New York based Power Pilates.  Todd originally started Pilates to relieve back
pain and improve his posture.  He experienced such dramatic results and loved Pilates so
much, he decided to start teaching it.  You'll find his classes provide clear explanation and
easy to follow instructions for all fitness levels.

What to Wear:  Pilates is usually done barefoot, so no special footgear needed! There
are a few things to consider when you dress for a Pilates workout. First, make sure your
clothes are comfortable and allow you to move and stretch fully.

You will also want to avoid wearing accessories while you're working out. Long necklaces,
belts, dangling bracelets and such could not only be distracting, but could be dangerous.
Similarly, hair needs to be out of the face and tied back if it is long.

One other note:  more and more people are finding that they are sensitive to perfumes and
strongly scented deodorants.  Please refrain from wearing strong scents.
What to Bring:  You won’t need to bring much with you.  I'll provide any equipment that
might be needed for the workout. That said, many people like to work out on their own mat.
Pilates mats are available in many stores and online.  Pilates mats are often made a little
thicker than a yoga mat, but a yoga mat will suffice.  While you probably won’t be guzzling
water as some do during aerobic workouts, you will still want to have a water bottle
available, and make sure that you are well hydrated before you start.
